Summary

The dilemma we face in difficult (or emotionally charged) conversations is that we have learned from past experience that we can lose both ways: if we avoid the problem or if we confront the problem. When avoiding we often feel like a coward who has been taken advantage of, we lose the opportunity to improve things, and our feelings fester. When we confront the problem things usually get worse and out of hand quickly. What we don't realize is that we need to shift from a "message delivery stance" (proving a point, giving our piece of mind, or getting our way) to a "learning stance" where we understand what happened from the others' point of view.
