The Cynefin framework helps executives sort issues into five contexts: in simple contexts, leaders must first assess the fact of a situation, in complicated contexts, leaders must sense, analyze and respond, in complex contexts, leaders need to probe first, then sense and then respond, in chaotic contexts, leaders must first act to establish order and sense where stability is present and then work to transform the situation from chaos to complexity, in disorder contexts, the only solution is to break the situation into its constituent parts and assign each to one realm, leaders can then make decisions and intervene in contextually appropriate ways.
